Diver introduction class on diving course in Bali

Interview with our Senior Dive Instructor: Indra

Hi Indra! Let’s start with the basics; what is your full name and where are you from?  Hello, my name is Ida Bagoes Indra Suryawan. I was born in Surabaya, East Java. When I was 4, my parents moved to Makassar, South Sulawesi. At the age of 24, the whole family moved to Bali.

What studies did you do in Sulawesi?
I was privileged to study at the Hasanuddin University in Makassar. I got my Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Public Relations.

How did you get involved in Scuba diving?
When I was about 23, I worked in a Hotel in Makassar. At the time, there was only one dive center in South Sulawesi and they happened to be doing introduction dives in the Hotel’s swimming pool. The next year, after moving to Bali, I did my PADI Open Water Course.

Did you start working as a guide immediately?
No, that didn’t happen until the following year, after getting PADI Advanced Open Water certified. At that time (around 1995) you could be a guide even without a certification.

How did you go from Dive Guide to Padi Instructor?
Back in 2006, the year Absolute Scuba Bali was founded, I was invited and offered a job. In addition, the company organized my internship to become a PADI Instructor. I’ve been working here ever since.

Wow, 11 years straight, that’s why you’re the “Senior”. Now, what is your favorite Dive Site in Bali?  My favorite Dive Sites are around Nusa Penida, I just love the clear waters and beautiful colors of the corals. Also diving with Manta’s never gets boring!

Now, outside of diving, how do you like to spend your time?
I’m a family man. Whenever not diving, I like to be with my family. I’m happily married for over 19 years and have 4 kids. The youngest one, the only son, is only 1 year and 9 months old.

Indra, thank you very much for your time.
You’re welcome
